Avengers

The Avengers is the name of a fictional superhero team as well as several different comic book titles published by Marvel Comics. The group was created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby and first appeared in the premiere issue of the first ongoing Avengers comic series. Heralded as "Earth's Mightiest Heroes", the initial line-up consisted of characters who had already made their mark in the Mighty Marvel Universe in anthology books such as Tales of Suspense, Tales to Astonish and Journey Into Mystery. The Avengers have gone on to spawn numerous spin-off and reboot titles as well as two animated programs, two animated direct-to-video films and a live-action feature film franchise. The team's initial line-up consisted of Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk, Ant-Man and the Wasp. Their first foe was the Norse God of Mischief, Loki - brother of Thor. With issue #4, the team added it's first new recruit - the shield-slinging World War II hero Captain America.
