Biography[]
When the great Frost Giant known as Ymir fell into slumber, his body slowly began to melt over the ages. From the warm winds that melted Ymir's icy form was born the first of the Aesir. As the sleeping giant continued to melt, a cow was conceived, which came to be known as Audumbla. When Ymir awakened, Audumbla served as wet-nurse until he could reconstitute his form. From that day forward, all Frost Giants sustained themselves from the four streams of milk produced by Audumbla's udders.
Audumbla sustained herself by licking at the ice, and in time, it had worn down to reveal a new species of man - the first of the Gods of what would one day be Asgard. This was Buri, whose lineage would go on to include Odin Borson, and Thor Odinson. [1]
Notes & Trivia[]
- Audumbla may be an analog or an aspect of Gaea - the Earth Mother.
- There are conflicting accounts regarding Audumbla's interaction with Buri. Journey Into Mystery #97 states that she observed Buri freeing himself from the ice, while Thor Annual #5 posits that she licked the ice until it melted enough so that Buri could free himself.
