Armageddon is an American live-action feature film of the natural disaster and action/drama genres. It was directed by Michael Bay and written by Jonathan Hensleigh and J.J. Abrams based upon a story treatment by Hensleigh and Robert Roy Pool. It was produced by Touchstone Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films and distributed through Buena Vista Pictures. It was released theatrically in the United States on July 1st, 1998. Although known for its visual spectacle, brisk pace and scene-chomping cast, Armageddon is almost universally reviled by viewers and critics. The movie has a cumulative 40% "Rotten" rating on the aggregate review site Rotten Tomatoes, as well as an unfavorable score of 42% on Metacritic. The premise of the film involves a big-ass asteroid speeding its way to Earth, but it is too big for the government to just nuke the hell out of it, so they have little choice but to seek assistance from the world's best deep core oil drillers who they fly up into space to crack the thing apart with their trusty drilling tools.
