Aqualas are a subspecies of alien featured in the Star Wars franchise. Officially, they have not appeared in any of the canonical material, but are referenced at length in the Star Wars "Expanded Universe" material including novels, comics, video games and roleplaying supplements.

Description[]

Aqualas are a subspecies of the Aqualish race of the planet Ando and are one of three dominant breeds of Aqualish on the planet; the others being the Quaras and the Ualaqs. The Aqualas are the most populous of the three breeds, making up the majority of the overall Aqualish species. They are amphibious creatures, preferring to live and operate under water, though many are just as capable of functioning on dry land, though they usually prefer not to.

Aqualas are distinguishible from their Quara and Ualaq brethren by their cupped, fin-like hands, which aids them in swimming under water. Both the Quara and Ualaq subspecies have clawed hands with the Quara possessing five fingers on each hand and the Ualaq's possessing three. Like the Quara, Aqualas have only one set of eyes. The Ualaqs have two sets of eyes.

Notable Aqualas[]

One notable Aquala is Teak Sidbam, a collections agent who found work on Tatooine and was often confused with the Quara Aqualish, Ponda Baba. During the evening, he enjoyed relaxing at Chalmun's Cantina, which proved to be livelier and more hospitable at night than it apparently was during the day.

History[]

Notes & Trivia[]

Original promotional images for Teak Sidbam were intended to reflect Ponda Baba, but this was changed for the film Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, after the production crew used a fingered hand to represent Ponda's severed limb after it had been cut off by Obi-Wan Kenobi. The same mask and costume were later used for the obviously finned Aqualish seen in Chalmun's Cantina in the unofficial 1978 television sequel The Star Wars Holiday Special. Retroactively, this unidentified Aqualish was eventually given the name Teak Sidbam. [1][2]
