The Anti-Megalosaurus Force (AMF) is a fictional military unit featured in the Godzilla film series by Toho Company. It is part of the Millennium series and first appeared in the 2002 film Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla.
The Anti-Megalosaurus Force is an adjunct of the Japan Self-Defense Force and was founded in Chiba Prefecture in 1966. Its primary purpose was to defend the nation from the growing threat of daikaiju ("giant monsters"). By the late 1990s, the AMF had a membership total of 4,072 officers and enlisted personnel. Its central command center was located in the city of Narashino.
Through its history, the Anti-Megalosaurus Force has had to defend Japan from the likes of Mothra, Gaira (Green Gargantua) and finally, Godzilla. The Godzilla that attacked Japan in 1999 was not the same creature that was destroyed back in 1954, but was clearly of the same species. The AMF rolled out their maser tank weapons, which proved to have little effect against Godzilla. Operator Akane Yashiro fired the weapon and missed, and then mis-judged navigating the carrier, causing it to collide with another vehicle, pushing it off a ravine where it was then crushed by Godzilla's foot. Yashiro was demoted in rank due to her actions in the field, but she never forgave herself for the deaths of the men who died because of her error.
The Anti-Megalosaurus Force eventually evolved in the Japanese Xenomorph Self-Defense Force (JXSDF) during a time when they initiated the Mecha-G Project, which resulted in the creation of a robotic defender named Kiryu, or, MechaGodzilla.
