Anansi is a figure of African folklore. He is sometimes referred to as Kwaku Anansi and takes the form of a spider. Anansi is sometimes presented as a trickster god and is featured in stories that originate from West Africa and the Caribbean. Tales of Anansi are very prominent in the country of Ghana.
In DC Comics continuity, Anansi is responsible for the creation of a mystical talisman known as the Tantu Totem. This artifact is worn by Mari McCabe - the costumed superhero known as Vixen. When she calls upon its power, she can summon the characteristics of various animals, such as such as the strength of a gorilla, the speed of a cheetah, the savagery of a shark, etc.
In the continuity of the DC Television Universe, Anansi is a favored deity amongst the Zambesi people. He created the Anansi Totem, which was one of six such mystical talismans given to the Zambesi people by the Gods in order to empower them against the threat of a disembodied demonic entity known as Mallus.
