The Amityville Horror is an American horror film of the haunted house subgenre. It is based on the novel The Amityville Horror by Jay Anson, which in turn was based on supposedly actual events according to testimony given by George and Kathy Lutz. The film was directed by Stuart Rosenberg and the script was written by Sandor Stern. It was produced by American International Pictures and released theatrically in the United States on July 27th, 1979. The movie was succeeded by numerous sequels beginning with Amityville II: The Possession in 1982. The movie was remade in 2005 by Andrew Douglas and was called The Amityville Horror.

  • Production on The Amityville Horror began in August, 1978. Exterior location shots were filmed in Long Island, New York while the Amityville House itself was filmed in Toms River, New Jersey. Other scenes were filmed in Ocean County New Jersey, while the church scenes were shot in Point Pleasant.

  • The Amityville Horror grossed $7,843,467 over it's opening weekend from July 27th-July 29th, 1979 where it was screened in a total of 748 movie theaters.
