"Survival of the Hittest!" is the title to the 299th issue of the first Amazing Spider-Man ongoing comic book series published by Marvel Comics. The story was written by David Michelinie with artwork by Todd McFarlane and inks by Bob McLeod. McFarlane also rendered the cover art illustration to this issue. It was colored by Bob Sharen with lettering by Rick Parker. The story was edited by Jim Salicrup with Glenn Herdling as assistant editor. This issue shipped with an April, 1988 cover date and carries a cover price of .75 cents per copy.

- The character of Spider-Man was created by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko. He first appeared in Amazing Fantasy #15 in August, 1962 in a story titled "Spider-Man!" The character has since gone on to become one of the most well-known and enduring super-heroes of all time, having appeared in numerous comic book titles, as well as feature films, animated projects and video games.
- This is the first full appearance of Eddie Brock as Venom. He makes a two-panel cameo appearance only. He appears next in Amazing Spider-Man #300.
- Estelle is the cleaning lady that Mary Jane Watson hired.
- Annie Deitz is the administrative assistant at Empire State University.
- Mary Jane's nightclub friend Paul is intended as a pastiche of Paul Shaffer, who was the band leader on Late Night with David Letterman from 1982 to 1993.
