"Chance Encounter!" is the title to the 298th issue of the first Amazing Spider-Man ongoing comic book series published by Marvel Comics. The story was written by David Michelinie with artwork by Todd McFarlane and inks by Bob McLeod. McFarlane also rendered the cover art illustration to this issue. It was colored by Janet Jackson with lettering by Rick Parker & Ken Lopez. The story was edited by Jim Salicrup with Glenn Herdling as assistant editor. This issue shipped with a March, 1988 cover date and carries a cover price of .75 cents per copy.

- The character of Spider-Man was created by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko. He first appeared in Amazing Fantasy #15 in August, 1962 in a story titled "Spider-Man!" The character has since gone on to become one of the most well-known and enduring super-heroes of all time, having appeared in numerous comic book titles, as well as feature films, animated projects and video games.
- This issue marks the first appearance of Eddie Brock as Venom. He makes a cameo appearance only in the shadows. Venom will be fully revealed in his next cameo appearance in Amazing Spider-Man #299.
