Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart is a supporting character featured in the original BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who. He was played by actor Nicholas Courtney and was introduced in chapter 3 of the "Web of Fear" serial. The character made 103 appearances in the series in total. In 2008 the character appeared in the "Enemy of the Bane" serial from The Sarah Jane Adventures.

Overview[]

Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart was a British military officer who served in the regular army and later became the leader of the Unified Intelligence Taskforce, aka UNIT. A prim and proper man, he prized protocol above all else, but was also keen of intellect and kept an open mind about things beyond humanity's natural understanding of the world. Stewart came to appreciate the scientific expertise of the Doctor, and relied upon him on numerous occasions when it came to protecting the planet.

  • The character of Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart was created by director Douglas Camfield and writers Mervyn Haisman and Henry Lincoln.
  • Before taking on the role of Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, actor Nicholas Courtney also played the character Bret Vyon in four episodes of Doctor Who featuring the First Doctor.
  • Replaced Colonel Pemberton as commander of the British Army forces opposing the Great Intelligence's assault on London.
  • Following his time with UNIT, Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart became a teacher at Brendon public school.
  • Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart also appears briefly in a cameo role at the end of writer Paul Cornell's novelization of the 1997 ITV science-fiction serial The Uninvited. Although the character is not named in the book, the description is that of Lethbridge-Stewart and Cornell later admitted that this was indeed his intention.
  • Following his death, Stewart's corpse was resurrected as a Cyberman. Some part of his consciousness still resided inside the unit however, enough to save his daughter Kate from being thrown out of an airplane. The Cyberman-Stewart was destroyed when Danny Pink ordered all Cybermen to self-destruct. [6]
