An agent is someone who is employed by an agency. The term generally applies to law-enforcement and/or government agencies such as the F.B.I., the C.I.A., or any other number of alphabet agencies. Fictional organizations, such as S.H.I.E.L.D., also address their operatives by the title, agent. Members of the F.B.I. are often referred to by the title Special Agent.
- On The X-Files, the characters of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully are both referred to as Special Agents.
- Members of the National Threat Assessment Command (NTAC) from the TV series The 4400 were often addressed as agents. This includes agent Tom Baldwin, as well as his partner, Diana Skouris, who was actually on loan from the CDC.
- In the 2012 film The Avengers, Tony Stark, uncomfortable with his girlfriend Pepper Potts addressing S.H.I.E.L.D. Phil Coulson by his first name, sarcastically corrected her, claiming that Coulson's first name was actually Agent.
- On the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, Greef Karga was an agent of the Bounty Hunters' Guild. He issued bounty pucks to bounty hunters and paid out fees to recovered bounties.
