Abe Sapien is a fictional altered human and a supporting character featured in the Hellboy comic book franchise. He first appeared in Hellboy: Seed of Destruction #2 in April, 1994. A version of Abe Sapien also appeared in the 2004 Hellboy feature film where he was played by actor Doug Jones. Actor David Hyde Pierce provided the voice for Abe Sapien in the film.
Biography[]
Abe Sapien was discovered in his containment tube at in a forgotten chamber at St. Trinian's Hospital in Washington, D.C. by a group of plumbers. The chamber was handed over to the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. A note with an inscription was found on the container that read "Icthyo Sapien - Aprl 14 1865". As this was the same date that Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, people at the bureau took to calling him Abraham Sapien. [1]
In 1994, Abe accompanied Hellboy and Liz Sherman to Cavendish Hall to investigate the death of B.P.R.D. administrator Trevor Bruttenholm. They met the elderly Emma Cavendish and learned about the family's history and how it related to Bruttenholm. During this investigation, Cavendish's butler, Sven Olafson was revealed to be a frog monster pawn of Grigori Rasputin, who fought up against Hellboy in the manor. [1]
