A Trip to the Moon is a black and white silent film short produced and directed by Georges Méliès. The original French title is Le Voyage dans la lune and it is largely considered to be the first science fiction film. The movie is notable for it's infamous screenshot of the "Man in the Moon", distressed after finding a space capsule lodged in his eye. The movie is loosely based on the literary works of two masters of the genre, Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, specifically, Verne's 1865 novel From the Earth to the Moon and Wells' 1901 novel The First Men in the Moon.
