A Princess of Mars is an American novel of the science fiction and adventure genres. It was written by Edgar Rice Burroughs and first published in serial format in issues of All-Story Magazine in 1912. It was first compiled in hardcover novel format in 1917. The novel has spawned numerous sequels and has been adapted into film and comic book format. The series introduces the character of John Carter, who is a 19th century cavalry soldier from Virginia. During the American Civil War, he finds himself mysteriously whisked away to the planet Mars, which is called "Barsoom" by the natives. Because of the planet's lower gravity, John Carter enjoys the benefit of enhanced strength the ability to leap great distances. He encounters a race of green-skinned six-armed Barsoomians known as Tarks, and earns their respect and becomes a member of their ranks. John's adventures lead him to meet the beautiful princess, Dejah Thoris of the city-state of Helium, and he becomes a pivotal figure in the growing war between the red-skinned Martians of Helium and the Tarks.
