2001: A Space Odyssey was an ongoing comic book series published by Marvel Comics from December of 1976 to September of 1977 and lasted ten issues. All ten issues of the series were written and drawn by comics legend Jack Kirby. The series was inked and lettered by Mike Royer with coloring provided by George Roussos, Janice Cohen, Glynis Wein, Petra Goldberg and Sam Kato. Archie Goodwin edited all issues. The series took place in the continuity of Arthur C. Clarke's "Space Odyssey" mythos as brought to life in his novel 2001: A Space Odyssey, as well as the 1968 film adaptation, 2001: A Space Odyssey, directed by Stanley Kubrick. The film itself was adapted in Marvel's 2001: A Space Odyssey Treasury Edition magazine. The ongoing comic book series takes place after the events of the film and novel and introduces new characters, worlds and beings whose existances are affected by the presence of the alien Monolith artifacts.

Notes & Trivia[]
- 2001: A Space Odyssey #8 introduces the character of X-51, also known as Mister Machine and Machine Man. X-51 is retroactively appropriated into the mainstream Marvel Universe following the discontinuation of the series. He later went on to star in two ongoing titles as well as a four-issue limited series. The introduction of X-51 in 2001: A Space Odyssey also marked a departure from the prominent themes presented in the previous issues. Jack Kirby dropped the plot device of the Monoliths in order to focus more on Mister Machine and his adventures.
- One of the characters from the series, Gordon Pruett, introduced in issue #7, is transformed into a "Star Child" entity, a fate similar to the one that befell Dave Bowman in the original film.
