20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is a black and white silent film directed by Stuart Paton. It adapts the 1870 novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne and is the first major adaptation of Verne's work. A previous film called 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was directed and produced by French filmmaker Georges Méliès in 1907, but has little in common with either Verne's book or Paton's adaptation. The movie is historically notable innovative visual effects and use of underwater photography.

Notes & Trivia[]
- The production company Universal Film Manufacturing Company, later became known as Universal Pictures with Carl Laemmle as it's first president. Universal is also known for it's various horror and sci-fi movies of the 1930s and 40s such as Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, The Mummy and The Invisible Man, the latter of which was based on a science fiction novel written by H.G. Wells.
- With a budget of nearly $200,000, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was the most expensive motion picture released at that time. The movie was filmed at Universal Studios in Universal City, California, with exterior shots being filmed at New Providence Island in the Bahamas.
- The UK release of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea ran only 84 minutes. The US version had a running time of 105 minutes.
- With sixty-seven directorial credits under his belt, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea remains Stuart Paton's only contribution to the science fiction genre.
- Film scores were added to later video releases of the film. Brian Benison composed the music for the 1991 release and Maximilien Mathevon composed the music for the 2003 version.
- Some elements of the film also draw material from Verne's 1874 novel The Mysterious Island. Both books take place within the same shared continuity.
