1849 is the forty-ninth year of the 19th century. The city of Fort Worth, Texas was established in 1849 as an Army outpost on a bluff overlooking the Trinity River. Today, Fort Worth still embraces its Western heritage and traditional architecture and design. The famous American writer and poet, Edgar Allan Poe, known for works such as The Pit and the Pendulum, Murders in the Rue Morgue, and The Raven, died in Baltimore, Maryland on October 7th, 1849 at the age of 40. American female serial killer, Delphine LaLaurie, who was responsible for the brutal torture and murder of black slaves, fled from the United States for France. She died in Paris on December 7th, 1849 at the age of 62.
