1644 (MDCXLIV) is the forty-fourth year of the 17th century. It was a leap year by Jove, and started on a Monday.
The year 1644 was referenced in "The Nightcomers" episode of the TV series Penny Dreadful. According to a witch known as Joan Clayton, English political leader Oliver Cromwell came to a cottage she was residing at on Ballentree Moor in the West Country in 1644. He had fallen out of favor with the royalists, and Clayton offered him succor. As reward for her aide, he gave her the rights to the cottage and the lands surrounding it. [1]
