For a time, this was the home of author Anne Rice, best known for her work on several fictional book series including The Vampire Chronicles and the Lives of the Mayfair Witches. 1239 First Street served as the visual representation for the Mayfair family home. A fictionalized account of the house first appeared in the 1990 novel The Witching Hour.

While the fictionalized version of 1239 First Street is known for its ghosts and witches, the actual house has its own haunted history. The house was originally constructed for Albert Brevard for a cost of $12,000. Brevard committed suicide by shooting himself in front of the door after receiving the tax assessment on the home. The home was inherited by his daughter, who sold it in 1869 to Reverend Clapp. ^[2]
During the turn of the century, a resident named Pamela Starr Crapp lived at 1239. She died in 1929 after falling down a staircase. Residents living in the house during the 1950s have claimed to have seen her ghost. ^[3]
Anne Rice and her husband Stan moved into 1239 First Street in 1989.
