0 BBY/ABY is the dating standard used when attempting to place events in the Star Wars universe in correct chronological order. It refers to events and their chronological relation to the event known as the Battle of Yavin. All events chronicled in the original 1977 film Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope takes place in this year.

Darth Vader and the 501st Legion overtake the Rebel Blockade Runner Tantive IV and capture Princess Leia. Fortunately, she hides the stolen Death Star plans inside of R2-D2 and has R2 and C-3P0 escape from the ship. She is then captured by Imperials. | ANH |
R2-D2 and C-3P0 land on the planet Tatooine. They are captured by Jawas who sell them to a moisture farm owner named Owen Lars. The droids meet Owen's young nephew Luke Skywalker. | ANH |
R2 runs off into the night in search of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Luke and Threepio chase after him but run afoul of Tusken Raiders. Obi-Wan arrives and saves Luke and brings him back to his hut. Luke learns that Obi-Wan was once a Jedi Knight like his father. They find a recorded message from Princess Leia begging for Kenobi's help. Han, Leia, Luke, Chewie and the droids reach the moon of Yavin IV. Alliance leader General Jan Dodonna analyzes the stolen Death Star plans and discovers a weakness in the battle station. Addressing the Alliance's staff and pilots, he outlines a plan of attack against the Death Star. | ANH |
X-wing and Y-wing squadrons Red Group and Gold Group mount an offensive against the Death Star. Luke joins Red Group and they engage enemy TIE fighters on their way to the Death Star. Darth Vader personally enters the dogfight and takes down several Rebel pilots on his own. He nearly kills Luke but for the timely arrival of Han Solo who cripples Vader's ship. Using the Force, Luke fires the "kill-shot" that destroys the Death Star. | ANH |
